While the patient/addict is recovering, it is of utmost importance that the immediate relatives and co-dependants, who are usually non-alcoholic, understand the situation and behaviour of the recovering addict. “Samvad” is just aimed at it – it is a guiding conversation between an expert and the immediate family or the co-dependants, usually the women in the house. It is conducted once per month and the invitations are sent to all those who have registered for the program.
Mrs Anuradha Karkare, who has a wide experience working in the area of recovery of addictions and family counselling – has emphasized that the addiction is not just a physical ailment but also a psychological disease which can be treated as a mental illness. In the process of recovery, the co-dependants should always try to achieve independence regarding their own physical, financial, psychological and emotional sustenance. To quote her:
“Climb the ladder of life, independently while also giving a supportive hand to the addict and understanding his/her disease.”
It is necessary to attend the monthly sessions on an on-going basis for the better understanding. The program is primarily a dialogue between the co-dependants and the expert wherein the co-dependants can share their experiences or ask direct queries.
