Since the time immemorial Sound Vibrations and Music has been known to have influence over the human mind and body.  Music can alter the mood of the listener in subtle ways.  It has been said in the Ancient Vedic Scriptures:

“काव्यशास्त्र विनोदेन कालो गच्छति धीमताम

व्यसनेन च मूर्खाणां, निद्रया, कलहेन वा”

Meaning, the wise men would spend their time in learning poetry/music, learning culture/science or language.  On the other hand, fools waste their time in bad habits, sleep or fights”.

According to the Social Learning Model, people learn not only by direct experience but also by exposure to modelled behaviour.  To understand the patient’s behaviour in a better way, we at Santulan, as part of the De-Addiction Program organized an activity wherein the patients were given various Musical Instruments to participate.  Then they were shown Images/Emoticons depicting various human emotions – the patients were then asked to sing and play the instruments on a song relating to those emotions.  It was a group activity and all of the patients were divided into three groups.  The idea was not the competition but the shared contribution towards the act and awareness of self-emotions.

Everyone enjoyed the activity while also giving cues about their own behaviour patterns.
